About Us
In November 2008 Marta Smith posted a message on Diva's message board asking if any one would be interested in setting up a Film Society for Wakefield (At the time people had to travel out of Wakefield if they wanted to see foreign language and independent films that didn't make it to the multiplexes).
Sue Rigby read the message and they were soon in touch with Tony Davison of the Yorkshire Group of the British Federation of Film Societies. With Tony's help a taster film was screened at Henry Boon's Pub in Wakefield on the 27th January 2009 with Pane e Tulipani. From this screening it was found that there were many people interested in independent and foreign language films being screened in Wakefield and so Wakefield Film Society was officialy formed.
Films were screened at Wakefield College Grove Sports Club until December 2009 as it was found that a bigger venue was needed to deal with the increasing popularity of the Society. In January 2010 The Class was screened at the Theatre Royal Wakefield.
On 21st September 2010, Jan Dunn was the first director to visit and do a question and answer session after the screening of her film The Calling.
From September 2011 to
December 2011 we will start the transition to our new venue
Bishopgarth West Yorkshire Police
Training and Development Centre.
