In this profoundly moving story of the human spirit rising above appalling suffering, we see German, French, and Scottish soldiers trapped in the gruesome trenches of what would soon be recognised as the worst and most pointless slaughter the world had yet seen.    During Christmas Eve 1914 the unthinkable happened: rifles were left at the bottom of trenches to go to see  those opposite, shake their hands, exchange a cigarette, a piece of chocolate, and wish them Merry Christmas!
